American firm Waymo has revealed that its self-driving taxis will be on offer for hire on London's streets starting next year.
UK Capital Named as First European City for Autonomous Cab Service.
The UK capital will be established as the first European city to host an autonomous taxi service, akin to those already in use in multiple US cities and four other American urban centers utilizing Waymo's advanced systems.
Initial Testing Phase to Begin with Human Specialists.
Waymo stated that its vehicles are currently traveling to London and will start navigating on the capital's roads in the near future with trained human specialists supervising the vehicles.
Waymo – originally created as a spin-off from the tech giant's self-driving car initiative and part of the Alphabet family – indicated it would scale up operations and collaborate with the Department for Transport and Transport for London to obtain the essential approvals to provide totally self-driving services by 2026.

Additional organizations, including Uber and the British technology firm Wayve, have likewise announced their own strategies to trial self-driving vehicles in the city next year.

A fuller rollout of self-driving vehicles is anticipated in the UK after the new law is fully implemented in late 2027.
Waymo's Current Ties in the United Kingdom and Beyond.
Waymo currently has ties to the UK after opening its first European technical center in Oxford in 2019.
The company is also launching services in Tokyo using JLR electric vehicles, marking its second existing operation outside the US.
“Our experience shows how to safely expand totally self-driving taxi services, and we are eager to extend the advantages of our technology to the Britain,” remarked Tekedra Mawakana, adding that the system was “enhancing transport security and travel more inclusive”.

Waymo introduced its driverless vehicles in 2020 and currently claims it has served in excess of 10 million passengers in the US.
