Snapshots and Chanting as Ethiopian Citizens Celebrate Thanksgiving

Celebrants in traditional attire

Countless individuals of brightly clothed Ethiopians assembled in the heart of the city center for the yearly Irreecha event during recent days.

Irreecha is observed by the Oromo community, the predominant community, and takes place at the conclusion of the land's major wet season.

Festival gathering near water

Every year, festival-goers assemble around sacred water bodies to show appreciation to their higher powers for the greenery that the rains have brought.

"I've been celebrating this celebration for the previous nine years," stated 25-year-old Moata Abdulmajid.

"For me, Irreecha symbolizes my identity, it reflects the dignity and greatness of my people."

Traditional clothing and jewelry

Gentlemen, women, the elderly and the younger generation all participate, adorned in striking garments and ornaments.

They chant, move rhythmically, exchange narratives and arrange recently harvested grass and floral arrangements in water - symbolizing life, renewal and hope.

Global Participation

International visitors at festival

Irreecha does not only attract people from all regions of Ethiopia, visitors come from internationally.

"I visited the previous year - it was so good, so beautiful, I invited my offspring with me currently," mentioned Claire, originating from abroad.

"It's wonderful. All people welcomes you, everyone wants to give you a kiss and says welcome."

Celebration Schedule

Festival activities

The initial day of the celebration took place on Saturday in Addis Ababa. On the next day, participants travelled to a provincial location, a community close to the main city.

Although Irreecha has its foundations in native spiritual practices, it is now observed by the larger part of Oromos, without consideration for their belief system.

Modern Trends

Social media at festival

In the last ten years, the figure of people attending the festival has expanded substantially. This is partly due to the expansion of online networks, where many younger generation capture their outfits, dance moves and vocal performances during the celebration.

Historical Significance

Peaceful celebration scene

In the past, the festival was functioned as a stage for public dissent - the Oromo people have consistently raised issues about political and economic marginalisation.

Nonetheless, this year's celebration took place calmly, with an focus on joy, togetherness and cultural pride.
