Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic New Spear to Your World

The winter content update for Minecraft has touched down — and it features the initial fresh armament introduced into the title since the mace made its debut. The spear is finally here and it has the potential to alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you love chaos.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mounts of Mayhem drop also adds a host of fresh elements and updates related to riding animals in the game. That central theme made the spear the ideal addition for this release, as the creators had already known it was the moment to introduce a new weapon.

"From the outset, we understood that we aimed for a fresh armament that would increase combat distance, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," stated a senior product manager. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also was visually fitting for the use case."

If you're wondering whether mounted combat means you can tilt at your friends on steeds, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an combat move ideally crafted for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is one of the biggest functions for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the developer continues. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the jab attack, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you lower your spear and inflict increased harm [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] perfect for mounted duels."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The chaotic fun isn't limited to there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] ideal for equipping the elytra and taking to the skies and making some real mayhem," she teases.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now a reality, and it needs to become an competitive event immediately.

Another major addition in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This sea-dwelling mob, which is inspired by the nautilus shells found in-game for years, can be domesticated and ridden for submarine exploration. Not only will it transport you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also preserve your oxygen levels, so there's no need to come up for air for a breath.

The other inclusions are primarily things that want to kill you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a zombie Nautilus appearing in the water, frequently with a Drowned on its back. If you manage to take care of the Drowned, though, you can claim the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've long considered this problem periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to also introduce something for the ocean depths," the developer clarifies. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for underwater mounts that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked striking, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also notes that there are actually two distinct kinds of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you discover underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Further inclusions include the Parched, biome-specific undead archers that can withstand the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you venture in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their bones protruding. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a comparable rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.

The remaining updates on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some much-anticipated changes to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross rivers and lakes while mounted on a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it deserves.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

In summary, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself — and the potential for chaos — would have constituted a major improvement. Add in the Nautilus, and new threats seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mounts of Mayhem update is live for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
