German Liberty ‘At Risk’ States Merz as He Cautions Against ‘Dictated Peace’ in the Eastern European Nation

Opening the debate in the German parliament, Leader Friedrich Merz set out the stakes this fall, declaring that Germany faces choices “not about details, but about very fundamental issues” that will shape its future.

“We must take a sober look at the current situation in order to choose the correct path for our country,” he said.

He emphasized that “national liberty is under threat” with a increasing “feeling of vulnerability,” adding that Germany’s financial system is also “strained” from “an emerging trend in protectionism.”

Additionally, he cautioned against “factions at home and abroad” that question social cohesion and weaken German democracy.

On security, he began by saying that the Russian invasion of the neighboring country “has a very concrete impact on our lives,” and asserted: “We want this war to end.”

But he acknowledged that “there is reason to fear it will continue for a while longer.”

Merz stressed that “ending it at the expense of the nation’s political sovereignty and borders is out of the question,” and warned that “an imposed resolution” could “further motivate Putin to seek his next target.”

He then condemned recent Moscow’s unmanned aerial violations into Poland and the Romanian airspace.

“The Kremlin has repeatedly testing the limits,” he commented, but stressed:

We will not allow this.

‘National Defense Readiness Is Essential’, the Chancellor Affirms

The leader repeated his regular line on defense, stating:

We want to be able to defend ourselves so that we do not have to defend ourselves.

Additionally, he highlighted a broader point about the necessity of modernizing the nation, its emergency preparedness systems, and the military.

He also addressed economic relations, including looking for new partners “in an increasingly complex world.”

He said that “the separation between domestic and foreign policy is simply outdated,” as the government’s actions abroad “serve to preserve liberty, peace and prosperity at home.”

He also mentioned progress on his government’s mission to lower the number of refugee requests in response to growing migratory pressures.
