Experiments on animals in science could be eliminated faster under a fresh roadmap to increase the use of AI and bioprinted human tissue models, according to a British official.

Backing Replacement for Animal Tests

The strategy presented by the minister for science supports substituting specific animal tests that are currently employed when necessary to determine the safety of products such as critical immunizations and the impact pesticides have on organisms and the environment.

The strategy states that phasing out the use of animals in science can only happen when dependable and effective substitute approaches with the same level of protection for human exposure can take the place of them.

Financial Support and Rules

The government stated that new funding for scientists and simplified rules would help in developing techniques such as miniature organ simulators – small tools that imitate how human organs work using human cell samples.

Greater use of artificial intelligence to analyse vast amounts of information about compounds and forecast whether novel drugs will be secure and perform effectively on humans would be utilized, while 3D bioprinted tissues could create realistic human tissue samples, from dermal layers to liver, for experimentation.

Key Deadlines

Other plans under the initiative include an end to official assessments on animals to evaluate the potential for skin and eye irritation and skin allergies by the close of 2026.

By the year 2027, researchers are expected under the strategy to cease experiments of the potency of botox on mice, while by 2030 drug metabolism research – which track how a drug moves through the body over duration – on dogs and primates will be decreased.

One expert commented that the strategy sets a clear ambition towards removing animal use and supports increased access to the infrastructure, partnerships and materials needed to enable the additional progress and uptake of non-animal methods.
