2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Year of the Frog Game.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been far from new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. Yet, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is partially apparent elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the wave in gaming seems especially strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

When these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be witnessing a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
